Top 5 iPhone Calculator Tips

By iPad Pete 24 Comments

One of the most-used Apps on the iPhone & iPad is the Calculator App.

While you already know the basic features of the calculator app, there are some useful hidden features that will save you time in your day-to-day life.

Here are a few of my personal favorites…

1) Swipe to Delete Digits

If you type the wrong digit into your Calculator app (maybe you were typing too fast), you don’t have to start your calculation over from scratch.

There’s a trick that most people aren’t aware of: You can simply swipe right or left over the number with your finger to remove the last-typed digit. Like swatting away a pesky fly.

If you continue swiping, you’ll continue to remove multiple digit entries as far back as you need to go.

2) Copy & Paste Number

You don’t need to memorize the results of your calculation to re-enter them into other apps.

Instead, you can use an easier and faster method – just Tap & Hold on the number field, and then select Copy or Paste.

You can copy numbers out of your Calculator and into an email for example. Or, copy a number from another app and paste it into your Calculator App.

3) Quick Copy Last Result

If you’ve had to switch apps, you can still get the last figure that you calculated without going back to the calculator and copying it.

Long pressing the calculator button in your iPhone’s Control Center reveals a hidden option to copy your last calculation.

Note: To open your Control Center… Just swipe down from the top right to open your Control Center (Swipe up from the bottom on older iPhones).

4) Advanced Scientific Calculator

If you’re an iPhone user who needs more complex math formulas, your iPhone has an awesome calculator hidden away that’s perfect for you: The Scientific Calculator.

All you need to do is rotate your iPhone to landscape mode and your standard calculator transforms into a Scientific Calculator Perfect for square roots and trigonometry, but that’s a sine you’re on a tangent 🙂

If it’s not switching, make sure you don’t have orientation lock enabled in your Control Center.

5) Fast Search Box Calculations

Your Spotlight Search Box on your iPhone has calculator functions built in.

For quick calculations, just swipe down from the Home screen to bring up your Spotlight search box.

Then you can perform basic calculations by typing them in your search box.

Bonus Calculator Tip

I saved my favorite tip for last as a bonus…

You can quickly use Siri to make calculations for you.

Launch Siri and just say the equation… “What is 15% off of $25?”

Or… “What’s 153234 plus 1432412 plus 15435 plus 12433?”

This is great when you have a long string of numbers to add up, like when doing your taxes.

You don’t have to look back and forth between the written numbers and your calculator. Just keep your eye on the numbers and read them off for Siri.

It’s like having your old Math Teacher on stand by!

Here’s a useful hint… Read the numbers one digit at a time, like “One Four Seven” instead of saying “One Hundred and Forty-Seven”. Siri will be less likely to misunderstand the number you’re trying to input.
