A few months ago, I wrote about the mysterious magnets that were rumored to be on the yet-to-be-released iPhone 12.
Well, the speculation is over. Apple released the iPhone 12. And, now we know what the magnets are for.
Apple calls it “MagSafe”. (They’re always good with the names.)
MagSafe for iPhone 12 is a new feature that will make new accessories possible for your iPhone 12.
Basically, MagSafe is a magnetic mounting system combined with a charging system. And, it’s available on all flavors of the iPhone 12.
Here’s what it can do for you…
WIRELESS CHARGING
MagSafe improves wireless charging by locking the charger into the optimal position. In the past, if your Qi wireless charger wasn’t perfectly aligned on the charging coil, your iPhone would charge much slower.
In addition to being faster, MagSafe charging can send up to 15w of power to your iPhone. In the past, you were limited to only half of that power.
Apple is releasing both a MagSafe Wireless Charger and a MagSafe Duo Wireless Charger. The Duo version will charge both your iPhone and Apple Watch.
CASES
There will also be MagSafe Cases which have the magnets built into the case. So now you don’t have to worry about charging through a thick case.
A fancier leather case with some extra tricks has yet to be released.
In addition to the charging benefit, cases will be held in place and quickly snap on with the magnets.
OTHER ACCESSORIES
In addition to wireless chargers and cases, there are several other accessories that could use the new magnetic system.
A wallet sleeve can be magnetically attached to the back of your iPhone for carrying a small amount of cash and credit cards. A metallic layer protects credit cards from becoming demagnetized.
A floating dock will be released that floats your iPhone and Apple Watch while they charge.
Also car mounts will come out with the MagSafe Charging capability.
Other 3rd-party manufacturers are sure to come up with even more innovative ways for you to take advantage of the new Magnetic System.
It should get interesting!
Stay tuned…
Thank you
