Let’s admit it – there are times where we all seem to lose time when we are scrolling through various apps on our iPhones. It can be checking on social media apps, window shopping, or talking to family and friends.
What you thought will only take minutes took you hours on your phone already.
This is one of the reasons why the Focus update in the iOS 15 release is a helpful solution to help you focus on specific tasks. You get to concentrate on your tasks at hand by minimizing phone distractions. To do this, Focus gives you the option to either silence all notifications temporarily or just a few of them.
Setting Up
Here are the steps to help you set up Focus in your iPhone.
Step 1: Look for and tap on your Settings icon.

Step 2: Scroll down and look for the Focus option and tap on it.

Step 3: Once you go into the Focus settings, you have a number of selections to choose from

Do Not Disturb
The first one is the Do Not Disturb option

Once you tap in it, it brings you to this part. Simply toggle this to On

When you do that, you will notice two things – the slider turns green and the moon icon on the upper right starts to show.

If you look down, you will notice two options for Allowed Notifications.
1. People
Let’s take a look at the first option – People

This gives you the ability to choose who can contact you even if your Do Not Disturb option is turned ON. Simply click the Add Person option and choose your contacts.

If you tapped on the App selection, the same rule applies only that the apps will be the ones you are giving permission to send you notifications.

2. Sleep
In the main option, you can also choose Sleep

Once you tap this option, you simply turn it ON.
You also have the option to allow people or apps to get through. This is useful when you are trying to get long and restful sleep at night.

3. Personal
Next is the Personal Focus option.

Once you do, it first gives you an overview of the selection. Simply press next

Choose the people you want to get through to you even if you have Focus set on. Simply tap on the Add Person option and select from your contacts.

4. Work
In the main option, you can also add Work Focus.

Tapping on it will also give you an overview of the selection

Same thing applies – just add the people you want to get through to you even if you have this selection turned ON. Simply click the Add Person button and select from your contacts.

Summary
Before you get overwhelmed with all the options, you simply have to go back to the basic functionality of Focus. It helps you drum out distractions for a set period of time to help you accomplish a specific task. It can be trying to get 8 hours of sleep at night or focusing on a work task at home.
The option does allow exceptions for people (and even apps) to get through in case of emergency. It can be family members or friends calling you or your Mail app or Telgram app if you need work messages to get through.
Focus is a versatile update that helps you filter out distractions from your iPhone for a set amount of time. That is a pretty useful option especially when you can easily lose hours of your time just checking out shopping sites and even movie streaming apps.

Thanks a lot!
Thank you for all your help. I been following you for a long time and I am learning a lot.
Once again you shine Pete. You always do. I have been wondering what the “focus” thing was all about and now I know and have already started using it thanks to you. I have been following you for many years now and appreciate all the time and frustration you have saved me, first with your videos (which I do miss) and now with this format which I also like. Keep up the great work.
