Apple Maps may have had a bumpy road to greatness, but iOS 15 provides the biggest ever update to Maps and paves the way for a better user experience. There is so much to explore in the app that will in turn help you explore the world around you and far from you. Enhanced navigation, walking with augmented reality, and a brand-new city experience are just some of what Maps now has to offer.
Here’s an overview of all the upgrades that makes Apple Maps the best of the best.
Interactive Globe
It’s not often that we zoom out when we’re using Maps but with the introduction of a beautiful 3D globe you may want to leave your virtual neighborhood. Natural features like mountain ranges and deserts have been enhanced to show incredible detail. Discover the amazing textures and contours of the whole world right from your couch.
New City Experience
Apple has been developing this feature for a long time and the work has paid off. Four major cities, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and London are ready to explore in unprecedented detail with more cities soon to come. The addition of custom-designed landmarks will showcase what these cities have to offer. City details like elevation, roads, and buildings along with road details such as crosswalks, turn lanes, and bike lanes will help guide you as you explore these locales.
New Driving Features
Updates to the driving map provide details beyond traffic and incident reports and will allow drivers to navigate safely and easily. Now you can tell which lanes are for buses or taxis, where medians are located, and clearly displayed crosswalks will help you better look out for pedestrians. Highway interchanges have a three-dimensional view allowing you to clearly find your exit. And the route planning feature has improved estimates for time of arrival by incorporating the expected traffic at the time of departure.
Immersive Walking Directions
Walking to your destination is improved with accurate step-by-step guidance that incorporates augmented reality. Raise your iPhone to scan the area and locate buildings and roads in a real-world setting. Just don’t forget to watch where you’re walking!
Redesigned Transit
A redesigned interface for the transit map makes it easier to use and see upcoming stops. Maps also knows when your stop is approaching and will notify you that it will soon be time to disembark. Nearby stations will be prominently displayed, and you can choose your favorite routes and Maps will show those when you want to travel.
Editorially Curated Guides Home
Guides Home is an “editorially curated destination where you can find Guides for places you’ll love.” It is easier than ever to discover new incredible things to do in cities all over the world through Guides. With over a thousand recommendations from well-known brands such as the National Park Foundation and The Washington Post you can take a self-guided city tour that showcases the best a city has to offer. You can even create and share your own Guide!
But Wait, There’s More
Upgrades to Search, redesigned place cards, and an improved user account interface complete this epic Maps update. But just in case something does go wrong, it’s also even easier to report an issue.
