This tragic story of a 27-year-old Indiana man losing his life while attempting to make a video for TikTok has saddened many.
On a recreational trip to Puerto Rico, Edgar Garay fell off a 70-foot cliff near the lighthouse in Cabo Rojo and tragically did not survive.
His family seeks closure and strength during this challenging time by raising money to bring Edgar’s body home, so he can be laid to rest among friends and family.
Here is the full story of Edgar Garay’s untimely death.
The evening of the accident, the Coast Guard was informed of Garay’s fall, and the following day, a Puerto Rico Emergency Dive Unit retrieved his body.
CNN reported that Carlos Garay, Edgar’s brother, described his sibling as a “daredevil.
Carlos, who was not in Puerto Rico at the time, said that it had been his cousin who accompanied his brother and went sightseeing along the breathtaking cliffs.
Carlos said, “My brother has a TikTok account that he loved to upload videos to. Unfortunately, that was what he was trying to do when he was closer to the edge than he should have been.”
Carlos has launched a GoFundMe to cover the costs of returning his brother’s body back home to Indiana.
He wrote on the GoFundMe page, “Our family is now on a mission to bring our lovable sibling home so that he can be laid to rest among friends and family.“
Coast Guard official Captain José E. Díaz offered their heartfelt condolences to Garay’s family, saying, “We express our most heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Edgar Garay and pray they find closure and strength during this most difficult time. We appreciate the efforts of all the Coast Guard, Puerto Rico Police, and partner agency emergency responders, especially the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau dive unit that was able to locate Mr. Garay’s body in such a highly inaccessible and challenging environment.”
