Identify and Block Spam Calls Using Truecaller

By iPad Pete 4 Comments

When you want to take your iPhone’s caller ID capabilities to the next level, check out the popular app, Truecaller. Used by over 300 million people worldwide, Truecaller is the #1 caller ID app and with Community-based Spam Reporting, Auto-block, and many other features, the app goes beyond caller ID and into call management.

Set up Truecaller

Step 1. Download the Truecaller app from the Apple App Store here.

Step 2. Once the app has completed downloading, open it, and enter your phone number. You will be asked to confirm the phone number and whether you are a resident of California on two separate popups. Then tap “Agree & Continue” for the privacy policy.

Step 3. You will be sent a 6-digit, one-time password (OTP) via text. After your phone number has been verified, you will be asked to enter your name and the email address you want to use. Tap “Continue” to continue the set-up process.

Step 4. Tap “Next” on the following screen to personalize your experience.

Personalize

Step 5. Choose your ad options by toggling the selections off or on then tap “Next” to continue.

Spam Protection

During setup, you can turn spam protection on. If you choose to skip this now, you can access it later in the Settings menu by selecting “phone” and then “Call Blocking & Identification.

Step 6. Tap the “Open Settings” bar to be sent to your Settings app.

Step 7. Toggle all the toggles for Truecaller – Part 1 – 4 to “On.”

Step 8. Follow the return link at the top left to return to the Truecaller app.

Permissions Needed

Step 8. When you return to the app, you will be at the “Permissions Needed” screen. Tap “Allow Permissions” and two separate pop ups will ask you to access your contacts and allow notifications. You can choose “Don’t Allow” or “OK/Allow” and either option will take you through to the next screen.

Step 10. Tap the exit icon in the top left corner to leave the upgrade options page.

Spam Protection for Messages

This isn’t part of the initial setup, and you will need to activate it separately in the Settings menu.

Step 1. Open the “Messages” settings.

Step 2. Scroll down to “Unknown & Spam.”

Step 3. Toggle “Filter Unknown Senders” to the On position, if it is not already and select Truecaller from the SMS Filtering options.

Checking Calls

Step 1. To see who called you open your phone app and tap the “Recents” icon on the bottom.

Step 2. Tap the “Info” icon next to a phone number.

Step 3. Choose “Share Contact” from the list of options.

Step 4. On the next screen, swipe up and select “Search Truecaller” to see a profile on the caller.

Step 5. If you tap “View Full Profile” you will have more information and options for the caller.

Checking Messages

Use the same steps in Checking Calls but start with your Messages app and tap the info icon beside a conversation.

Reverse Number Search

Step 1. Open the Truecaller app and tap the “Search Any Number” bar. At the top of the next screen type a number into the search bar. If you have the phone number copied from somewhere else, Truecaller will automatically fill in the number in the search bar.

Step 2. Select the number from the populated list to see more information and options.

See Who Is On

Step 1. To see who has been on Truecaller recently tap the “More” hamburger icon in the bottom right corner on the main screen.

Step 2. Tap “My Contacts” to open your contacts list. If any of your contacts use Truecaller it will show a green dot and the last time they used the app.

Stop From Being Seen

Step 1. To hide your activity, tap the “More” icon again and select “Settings.”

Step 2. Open “Privacy Center.”

Step 3. Toggle “Availability” to the off position.

Remove Your Phone Number

If you decide you don’t need the app, you don’t want to just delete it from the home screen.

Step 1. Return to the “Privacy Center” in the “More” settings and select “Deactivate Account.”

Step 2. On the next screen select “Delete My Data” and then tap “Deactivate Account.”

Step 3. To complete the process, you will need to go to Truecaller’s official unlisting page.

Step 4. Enter the number you registered along with your country code if needed, and tap verify.

Step 5. From the pop-up box, choose “Unlist.” You will see a message that it takes about 24 hours to remove your data and fully deactivate the account.

Step 6. Delete the app from your iPhone.

The premium version offers no ads and additional features like “Who Viewed My Profile,” and “Incognito Mode.” After getting the premium version, you will need to return to the “Privacy Center” of the app and enable “View Profiles Privately” to enable “Incognito Mode.”

Truecaller is helping stop spam and fraud one call, or text message, at a time.

When I got the app it immediately asked me about which plan I wanted with the costs and would not let me continue without choosing one. I wanted to try it before paying for any plan.
