How to Take a Screenshot on Your iPhone

By iPad Pete 21 Comments

Taking a screenshot on your iPhone is useful in a wide range of situations. Maybe you’re playing a game with friends, and you just want to show off your high score.

Other times it is easier to take a screenshot of your favorite website than it is to try to copy and paste the text into a new document.

Fortunately, taking a screenshot is as easy as quickly pressing a few precise buttons on the device itself.

Note that the steps themselves will change depending on whether your iPhone has a physical home button. But regardless, you’ll hear the camera shutter sound go off, and you’ll instantly see a thumbnail preview of the screenshot itself.

Here’s how you can take screenshots on your iPhone in just a few seconds.

Taking a Screenshot on an iPhone With a “Home” Button

If you currently own any iPhone that has a physical “Home” button on the front of the screen, simply press that “Home” button and the “Sleep/Wake” button on the top of your device at the same time.

You don’t need to hold down these buttons. Just quickly press them, and you’ll see a thumbnail preview of the screenshot on your iPhone. Then, you can choose to save the screenshot, edit it or delete it depending on your needs.

Taking a Screenshot on an iPhone With a “Notch”

If you own any iPhone after the iPhone X – meaning any with a black notch in the top center portion of the screen – the process of taking a screenshot is a bit different. It’s still just as easy, thankfully – but the process has changed because there is no “Home” button present.

To take a screenshot on these devices, press the “Volume Up” button on the left side of your iPhone and the “Sleep/Wake” button on the right side at the same time. Once again, you don’t need to hold them down – just quickly press and release them.

You’ll still see the preview thumbnail on screen, and you’ll still be able to edit, save or delete the screenshot as needed.

Taking a Screenshot Using “Back Tap” Feature

Note: Back Tap feature is available for iPhones 8 or later, with iOS 14

First, turn ON the Back Tap feature by going to Settings, then tap on Accessibility, then Touch and “Back Tap”.

Select Double Tap or Triple Tap, then select an action.

Choose “Screenshot”.

Test it by tapping on the back of your iPhone (either double tap or triple tap, depending on what you chose above). You should see a mini preview of the screenshot pop up on your screen.

This will then be saved in your Photos app.

That’s it! Now you can take screenshots on your iPhone whenever you want simply by following these steps.

To quickly find your Screenshots…

Go to your Photos app, then tap Albums.

Scroll up to the see the bottom of all Albums.

Under Media Types, there’s a “Screenshots” Album.

All screenshots you took on your iPhone can be easily found here.
