How to Find and Delete Your Old Accounts

By iPad Pete 6 Comments

If you’ve been on the Internet for years, you probably have a huge number of accounts for services that you don’t really use anymore.

It’s important that you don’t just let these accounts remain forgotten. Think about all of the personal information that you upload to even something like a social network that you don’t use anymore.

What happens if their database is breached?

Do you use the same password on that account as you do on something you currently use?

What happens if someone steals that information? There’s no limit to the amount of damage they can do – which is why you should really make an effort to find and delete those old accounts as soon as you can.

Thankfully, this is a lot more straightforward than you might think. Finding and deleting old accounts is easy – you just have to keep a few basic things in mind.

Finding and Deleting Old Accounts: An Overview

First, you need to locate those old accounts – something you can do in a few different ways.

If you use a password manager like 1Password or iCloud Keychain, search through all of your stored accounts and make a list of the ones you don’t really use anymore.

Likewise, be sure to search through your email for keywords like “Welcome” and “Verify” to bring up old messages that you received when you registered. This can be a great way to find old accounts that you’ve simply forgotten about.

Obviously, the process to actually delete those old accounts is going to vary depending on which service you’re talking about.

Usually, you can find the option buried somewhere in the “My Account” or “Account Settings” menu once you log in.

If you’re having trouble, just go to Google and type in the name of the account and the phrase “Delete Account.” You’ll usually be able to find specific instructions.

Beyond that, you can also use services like JustDelete.me. They offer a full database with instructions for how to delete a wide range of different online accounts that you may be working with.

If you still can’t figure it out, don’t worry – just contact the service’s support team (using the “Contact Us” option in your account) and ask for more specific instructions that you can follow.
