Safer Passwords with iPhone Keychain

By iPad Pete 8 Comments

Keychain, otherwise known as the iCloud password manager, is a unique feature built into the iPhone that is designed to help you create the strongest and most unique passwords possible.

It’s a great way to both make sure that you’re using strong passwords on every account across the Internet, all while also avoiding the need to write anything down or to try to remember anything yourself.

However, if you ever change your passwords or get rid of those old, weak passwords you used to use, Keychain isn’t just going to delete them right away. They’ll still be in Keychain, taking up space – which is why you should make an effort to clear them every once in a while.

Here’s how you can get rid of your old, duplicate passwords from iCloud Keychain directly from your iPhone.

1. Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone.

2. Scroll through the list and select the option labeled “Passwords.”

3. Look for the section labeled “Security Recommendations.” It will have a number next to it representing the total number of duplicate and/or weak passwords that your iPhone wants you to change. Tap it one time.

4. Scroll through the list until you find the specific password you want to change. Tap the option labeled “Change Password on Website.”

Note that this will require you to go to the website or application in question to create a new password yourself. Log in to the site in question and follow the directions to change your password. This will vary depending on whichever site you’re talking about.

Once you get to the appropriate screen, you’ll be able to either choose your own password or use a strong password that is automatically generated by Keychain – the same steps that you originally used to create the password you’re now trying to change. It’s always recommended that you use a strong password, but you also have the option to just use one of your own.

If you’re prompted to do so, select “Update Password” on your Keychain to save the new password automatically. It will overwrite the old entry in Keychain, and you’ll be ready to go!

I have found that sometimes it asks if you and to replace the older password. Click yes, and your good. If it doesn’t and you have time to pursue, you can go to the listing for that password and more than one may be listed (with the date created). Delete the older ones.

If it doesn’t automatically add it to your other device. You can use the “send” icon (the square with “up” arrow) to air drop it to your other device.

The problem is if you have one that they suggest like 6&@+3yrcp, how are you going to remember it when it doesn’t always insert itself?

If it doesn’t automatically fill, you can go to your passwords, look it up, copy it and paste it where it is asked for.
