In order to protect the Wi-Fi network in your home, you really want to use a password that is a combination of numbers, letters and special characters.
This is great for the purposes of security – but it doesn’t exactly make it easy to share access to your network with your friends.
Luckily, the iPhone has a special feature built right in that makes this process more efficient than ever before. If you want to give your friends, family members or other loved ones access to your Wi-Fi network, you can just make them a quick QR code.
Then, they can scan the code and get right on your network – it’s as easy as that!
How to create a QR code on your iPhone so that your guests can connect to your Wi-Fi.
Apple Shortcuts are automations that allow you to quickly get one or more tasks done within your apps, totally automatically. Shortcuts can also be a way for multiple apps to interact with one another, all based on your pre-determined requirements.
1. Run this Shortcut that was originally written and published by Stephen Robles of AppleInsider.com.
You might be prompted with a message that says “‘Generate Wi-Fi QR’ Can’t Be Opened.”
To allow this automation, first search your iPhone for the app “Shorcuts”, to make sure it is active (some iPhones are set up to keep unused apps in iCloud, and will automatically reload the app by simply opening it.). This is native to your phone and does not need to be downloaded.
Next, go to Settings > Shortcuts > Allow Untrusted Shortcuts, then enter your Passcode.

Then, try running this Shortcut again.
2. Run the above shortcut a single time. Scroll down to the bottom and tap on “Add Untrusted Shortcut”

3. You will see the options either “Current Network” that you are using, or “Type Network Name” for a different network and manually enter the Network Name.

4. Enter the Wi-Fi Password, then tap on “Done”.

4. It will now create the QR code that others can then scan using their cameras to get onto your Wi-Fi network.

5. Tap on the share icon (box with arrow up) to share the QR code.

You can send via AirDrop, email or messages. The best option is to save it on your device, or print the QR code. That way, whenever someone needs to connect to your Wi-Fi network, they’ll be able to without any trouble.

How to Scan the QR Code
Now that you have the QR code in question, all you have to do is show it to someone and they’ll be able to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
They just have to open the “Camera” app on their phone and point it at the QR code. At that point, a “Push” notification will appear on the screen asking them if they want to connect to the network in question.
All they have to do is select “Yes” and they’ll be online, even before they get to close the Camera App. Absolutely no extra steps!
Keep in mind that they do still have to be within the range of your Wi-Fi network for this to work, however. But they won’t have to remember a long, complicated password any longer.

Usually I can follow your instructions because they are clearly written. But this time my phone screen doesn’t line up with your screen shots. I got lost at “You might be prompted with a message that says “Generate Wi-Fi QR” Can’t Be Opened.” and haven’t seen screen shot under #2
I was able to unlock the “Untrusted Shortcuts” but after that I’m stuck.
Help!
Hi Cheryl, after Allowing Untrusted Shortcuts in Settings, go back to this post and tap on the link to the Shortcut again in Step 1. This will run the Shortcut again, with the updated settings on your iPhone. We’ve also updated the post. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Hi Pete: Thank you for all the wonderful tips & information. Can the QR code be used with a laptop? & if so, how? Thank you ~
