While white noise sleep machines have been on the market for quite some time, the idea of having one built into your phone is a great free alternative. Plus, you always have it with you, even when traveling.
I use white noise every day for my daily meditation. OK… it’s not so much a meditation as it is an afternoon nap.
What is White Noise?
White noise is a type of sound that contains all frequencies audible to humans. It is made by mixing sounds of different frequencies together.
It sounds like a rushing waterfall or a fan running in the background. It helps mask other environmental noises, making it easier for people to fall asleep, concentrate, or relax.
Benefits of Using White Noise to Fall Asleep
The primary benefit of using white noise is that it can help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Studies done by the National Institutes of Health show that listening to white noise before bed can make you feel less stressed and sleep much better.

How To Use The White Noise Feature on Your iPhone
If you have an iOS 15 or later iPhone, then you can easily access the white noise feature on your device.
First, open up your settings app and navigate to:
Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Background Sounds
Once there, you will be able to choose from several different sound options, including rain, ocean waves, thunderstorms, and more!
How to Add a White Noise Shortcut
Consider adding an accessibility shortcut so that you can always get to the background sound settings with just one tap. To do this, go into your phone’s settings and navigate to:
Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Select Background Sounds.
You can then select the shortcut action you want to take to access your white noise options quickly.
How to Set a White Noise Timer
You may want your white noise to lull you to sleep, then turn itself off, so it’s not running all night. To do this, set a timer.
1) Go to Your Clock App
2) Tap the Timer
3) Set the length of time you want your white noise to stay on.
4) Under “When Timer Ends,” select “Stop Playing” (instead of an alarm sound.)
Now, when the timer counts down to your set time, your white noise will stop playing.
Using white noise could be just what you need if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep at night, whether you use a dedicated device or the built-in background sound feature on your iPhone.
