How to Enable “Reachability” on Your iPhone

By iPad Pete 1 Comment

Do you enjoy having a bigger iPhone screen?

But…do you also struggle to reach for the top part of the screen when using the iPhone with one hand?

In a best-case scenario, you should be able to use your iPhone with one hand. In some situations with a screen as large as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, this isn’t just difficult. It’s literally impossible.

Thankfully, all hope is not lost. Apple has actually included a feature called “Reachability,” which makes it easier to hold your phone and access icons at the same time. It brings the screen “down” so that it’s easier to tap on certain apps with your thumb.

“Reachability” is not enabled by default, but don’t worry – turning it on literally takes a matter of seconds.

Here’s how to enable “Reachability” on your own iPhone:

1. Open the “Settings” application on your iPhone.

2. Scroll through the list of menu items on screen until you find the one labeled “Accessibility.” Tap on it to select it.

3. Locate the “Touch” section of the menu on screen.

4. Tap once on the button to the right of the “Reachability” menu item. This will turn the button from gray to green, which will indicate that the feature has been enabled.

That’s it! Now, the next time you’re having a hard time reaching a particular icon, all you have to do is:

On an iPhone with Face ID: Swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen.

On an iPhone with a Home button: Lightly double-tap (not press down) the Home button

So long as you trigger the gesture in the right way, the entire screen will slide downward – making it easier to access icons at the top of the screen using only one hand.

To reset the screen, tap the top of the screen.

All told, “Reachability” is a great way to make sure that you can always use your iPhone without having to readjust your grip — exactly the way it should be.
