Elon Musk, the enigmatic South African-Canadian billionaire and zero-regulation advocate, recently made an unexpected call for regulatory oversight of artificial intelligence (AI).
During a Tesla investor meeting to discuss the company’s plans for the future, Musk admitted his anxieties about AI and stated that it is “quite dangerous technology” that should be monitored by an “authority or something.”
This statement is a surprise, given his involvement with OpenAI and his dismissal of it as “woke” in recent months.
Could this be a case of “regulation for thee but not for me?”
Read on to find out what Elon Musk had to say about AI and his potential plans for the future.
Elon Musk’s Involvement in AI Projects
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that can be used to make decisions or solve problems, just like a human would.
It has become very popular in recent years. It is used in many ways, from controlling self-driving cars to helping doctors diagnose people with illnesses.
The technology has become so advanced that some people are now worried about the potential risks it could pose.
Elon Musk is one of those people. He is a famous entrepreneur and inventor who has been involved in AI-related projects since 2015 when he helped found OpenAI – an organization that created ChatGPT.
Recently, however, Elon expressed his worries about AI during a Tesla investor meeting.
He said that he is “a little worried” about it and believes there needs to be some kind of regulation so that AI development is done in the public interest. Because it can be very dangerous if not used correctly.
Elon’s True Motive?
Elon’s concerns may have been motivated by news that he was planning to create his own competing AI company.
He believes the current Chat GPT technology is too “woke” because it has limits on outputting text that is hate speech, harassment, or the glorification of violence.
Elon believes there should be regulations on what parameters Chat GPT can set.
In other words, Elon appears to be a free-speech absolutist who supports regulation for everyone except himself, which can seem hypocritical.
This is the same staunch supporter of free speech who, when first in charge of Twitter, chose to abruptly revoke access from numerous journalists that had vocally opposed him on the platform.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Elon Musk’s views on AI demonstrate how powerful and advanced the technology has become.
It is important to be aware of the potential risks it could pose and to make sure that any development in this field is done in a way that benefits everyone.
But, we should be wary of billionaires who call for regulation of competing companies when they may have a huge financial interest in that regulation.
