For years, Apple has been rumored to be putting out an item tracking device that would rival Tile for industry dominance.
We say “rumored,” because Apple has held many events since discussion about the trackers began… only to leave us with nothing in the way to show for it.
Well, the day has finally arrived and as a part of the company’s spring 2021 event, Apple has officially announced the AirTags – a $29 tracking system that will help make sure you never lose your keys (or anything else valuable, for that matter) ever again.
Apple’s AirTags: Breaking Things Down
Apple bills AirTags as “a super easy way to keep track of your stuff,” and all it takes is one quick look at the available features to see just how true that really is.
These small devices begin at $29 a piece, or $99 for a pack of four. You can easily attach one to your key ring, slip one into your backpack or put them in a wide range of other places.
At that point, you can easily see where the associated items are in the “Find My” app on your iPhone.
If you happen to misplace an item like your keys, finding them again couldn’t be more straightforward. You can use the “Find My” app on your iPhone to use the built-in speaker to play a sound, making sure that you never lose anything important to you ever again.
But the beauty of AirTags is how they work perfectly inside the existing Apple ecosystem. You can easily say “Hey Siri, find my keys,” for example. Siri will instantly play a sound on the AirTags and you can follow it until you find whatever it is that you’re looking for.
AirTags also include a feature called “Precision Finding,” which can help you see the precise distance between your iPhone and whatever item you lost down to a range of just a few inches.
It’ll also tell you the exact direction you should be headed in, too – making finding your valuables an absolute breeze.
Note, however, that the “Precision Finding” feature only works with Apple devices that use ultra wideband technology. This means that it is currently limited to iPhone models beginning with the iPhone 11 and newer.
Still, the implications of AirTags are nothing if not exciting – and it will be interesting to see how users take to them moving forward.

I’ll bu one for my keys. I wonder if it’d work with pets.
Yes works with Pets too. Will help them find their keys 🙂
So, with an iPhone X, I can still use the Air Tag to “find my keys” but just not have the “Precision” feature?
Yes, according to the offical Apple website… https://www.apple.com/airtag/
The “Precision Feature” seems to be the only limitation to pre-iPhone 11 models.
What is the range of this? How far away will it track? Important questions.
There is a mode you can turn on if it’s out of range. Then it can get picked up by anyone on the network. So, if you leave your keys on the bus… Someone else’s iPhone can pick it up and report it to the network anonymously.
Thanks for this info, Pete. I have the iPhone XR. Everything works but the ‘precision’ feature?

Waiting, waiting, waiting for a model I can put on my glasses!!
Maybe you could put it inside an eyeglass case. Then if you always get in the habit of putting your glasses in the case, you can find them.
My eyeglass guy always reminds me… “Always in the case, when not on your face.”
Amazon only shows the tracker. Where can we get the holder for our key ring as you show on your site?
