Access Your iPhone’s Scientific Calculator

By iPad Pete 10 Comments

Plus 4 hidden gems you never thought you needed

Your iPhone’s Calculator app has been one of the longest workhorses inside your phone. Apple had this app since 2007 when the first iPhone model was released. This makes the app one of the longest native applications inside your phone. This is the reason why people start to think that it’s just a basic calculator app, or is it?

Not as basic as most people think

There is no denying the fact that we all need a decent and basic Calculator app on our iPhones. It helps us quickly make computations when needed. But did you know that you have a powerful scientific calculator on your iPhone? One that can easily help you perform more advanced and complex computations. No need to go through your App Store looking for a calculator app!

Here are 3 easy steps to access your scientific calculator:

Tap the Calculator app on your iPhone to open the app

This should open your basic calculator

Now turn and hold your iPhone sideways (landscape mode). This automatically opens up your scientific calculator!

*Bonus: Tap the “2nd” butting to get more options. You will see some of the functions change to give you more options and flexibility.

4 Calculator tips to help you make the most of the app

Now that you have discovered how to access your scientific calculator, here are 4 more gems you might not have known about your Calculator app.

Easily erase digits you entered

We all make mistakes even when tapping numbers in your calculator. When you do, you might simply be erasing everything and starting all over again. You don’t have to do that anymore! Did you know that you can simply swipe left (or right) above the keys? It will undo the last digit in your calculator. You need to change two numbers, then swipe twice.

Erase a whole set of numbers

You might have entered a completely different set of numbers and need to redo the whole thing. Well, you just have to erase everything, easy right? But what if you need to erase the second set of numbers? Say in an equation of 123 X 456 and you need to change the 456 to 645. You don’t have to redo the whole thing. Simply press the “C” or clear button and it erases your last entry, not the whole thing!

Copy the last result without opening the app

Do you need to copy the last result you have in your calculator? Maybe you need to quickly send it to a friend in your chat. No need to open the Calculator app, simply long-press the app and the copy option shows up.

Your Calculator app can talk, well if you let it

If you want to hear your calculator read your results or even spell out the numbers, simply long-press the numbers and the “Speak” and “Spell” options show up. If not, then check Settings and your Accessibility option. Toggle the Spoken Content then Speak Selection (iOS 13 and later) option or the Speech then Speak Selection (for iOS 12 and older)

You see, your calculator is not simply a boring app that you open from time to time. Who knew it can even read the results back to you?

Good information, thanks. I’m am also wondering why I would need a Spple watch with cellular to have the “Left behind” feature work if I forget my IPhone. All I get is a symbol of a phone with a ted X through it at the top of my watch but no sound or vibration notifications.

I’ve had an iPhone for years and never knew any of the calculator tricks. Thanks. Now if I could save 1 number to use (like 8.75 for state and county sales tax, it would be perfect. Example: 2.98 + sales tax would display 3.24.
